Each piece evolves slowly, inspired by the discovery of a new fabric or bead.
The vibrant, colourful fabrics of Africa dominate; sturdy 100% cotton isishweshwe, designed and made in South Africa and Wax Fabric, adored throughout the continent. These are complimented by the addition of new and vintage fabrics such as raw silk and hemp.
I am drawn to the simple, raw beauty of African beads, handmade using ancient techniques and often limited resources. Ethiopian “silver” handmade from recycled aluminium pot, pans and old bullet casings, remnants of a war torn past. From Ghana come recycled glass beads and brass beads, made using the labour intensive lost wax method. Tuareg beads of ebony and aluminium.
The result: unusual works of wearable art; created as one would a sculpture or painting but made to be worn and enjoyed.
To own one is to own something vibrant and original – a tiny chunk of the wonderful continent of Africa.
